Introduction to NewsBank

NewsBank provides a comprehensive collection of reliable news sources covering a wide array of topics and issues.

We currently subscribe to Access Australia: Victoria, which provides full access to Image Replica editions of The Age, The Sunday Age and The Herald Sun, in addition to other local newspapers from across Victoria. Click on the buttons to the right to search NewsBank, or to read The Age or The Herald Sun newspapers.

Special Reports

NewsBank’s Special Reports are news articles, images, maps and other useful content grouped for convenience under specific topics and themes. They enable users to quickly locate information while helping them gain better insight into current global issues and events.

Each Special Report features current and retrospective coverage with new articles added daily. There are over 60 Reports to be sure the information you need is always available. Special Reports are easily accessible from the left side bar on your online resource menu page and on search screens.

To find Special Reports, head to NewsBank, then click on Special Reports on the right below the main Search Bar:

NewsBank Searching Tips

Quotation Marks

  • Use quotation marks around two or more search words to find articles that include a specific phrase.

Example: A search for “global warming” will find items containing that exact phrase.

Wildcards

  • Use wildcards when you are unsure of spelling or when you want to include multiple forms of a word.
  • Use an asterisk (*) to include multiple letters and forms of a word.

Example: A search on Petr*us will find all the items containing Petraeus or Petraus

(a great help for searching despite variations in spelling)

Example: A search on truck* will also search world such as trucks, truckstop, trucking, etc

  • Use a question mark (?) to replace a single letter in a word.

Example: A search on wom?nwill find items containing woman or women

Example: A search for g??se will find items containing goose or geese

Please note: our current subscription only provides access to news sources from Victoria, Australia, therefore searching by country will not bring up global news items. Please let us know if having access to global news sources is something you are interested in.
